About Us

Epic Slant Press is a small publishing company based in North Carolina that currently focuses on books and games. Positivity is the driving force that guides each and every project that the company takes on. The team strongly believes that with a positive outlook anyone can achieve great things. Epic Slant Press strives to support small and local businesses, aid fellow entrepreneurs, and donate a portion of all profits to charities and good causes.

Why Positivity?

Think of a time when you went back to a store or restaurant and an employee there remembered your name. That simple act probably gave you warm feelings (and might help retain your business!). How about a day when all of your customers were angry or just apathetic, and then you had that one customer that was cheerful and grateful for your help? Positive encounters like these make lasting impressions and it is our mission to better serve the community by creating as many of them as possible.

The Guild Leader’s Companion 2e – Organization Officers

Ferrel Wears PlateOne of the pitfalls I see new leaders stumble into (with great frequency) is attempting to handle everything alone. It is easy to slip into the role of “control freak,” but it will do a lot to wear you out. The truth is that you’re going to need help, and it is best to be prepared on how to find it. Before we discuss the why and how, it is important to look at who makes a good candidate for an officer position.

A project deferred

Almost four years ago I released my first article on Epic Slant. It was about how Age of Conan lacked a proper guild user interface. It set the tone for what this site was all about. Epic Slant was a new project for me after coming off of a failed MMORPG news site. This was my home to discuss guild related issues and my general observations about MMORPGs. These observations typically came up when I was displeased about something. It amazes me that I have been at this for years. It also amazes me at how this blog has transformed and grown.

Guest Post: Birthright’s MMO Influence: Leadership and Party Dynamics

Fourteen years. That’s how long I have been playing MMOs. From Ultima Online all the way to Star Wars: The Old Republic, I’ve pretty much run the gamut of online gaming. I love the MMO genre. Love it.

I also love genre fiction. The conventions of fantasy, science-fiction, and horror are pretty much my life’s blood. If there aren’t wizards, spaceships, or things that go bump, then it’s probably not on my bookshelf.

The Guild Leader’s Companion 2e – Chapter One Sample Two

Ferrel Wears PlateThis week I want to continue the series of samples from The Guild Leader’s Companion 2nd edition. We’re discussing the role of the organization leader! If you missed the first sample from chapter one you should read that before diving into this one. Both samples are part of a larger section and won’t make as much sense out of context! I hope you enjoy the advice!

NBI: Guest Post

Newbie Blogger IconIt can be really tough to get the exposure you need as a new blogger. Even with the Newbie Blogger Initiative in full swing you can’t be certain that potential audiences will click through a shared link to check you out. You need to get your name and work out in front of someone before they come to your site. How do you do that? Guest posts! Long time bloggers with established audiences know that content is important. The more quality content the better!

The Guild Leader’s Companion 2e – Chapter One Sample One

Ferrel Wears PlateThese days I’ve been wearing a lot of hats when it comes to my small publishing business. When I decided to be more than an author it meant taking on a huge amount of responsibility in making everything work. I’ve become an editor, strategist, and a marketer. I’m still learning in all of those areas but for The Guild Leader’s Companion 2nd Edition I wanted to try something new: giving away a lot of the book for free. Over the next couple of months I’ll be releasing the book here on Epic Slant and on the product page for the book on Epic Slant Press. My goal is to show everyone that the book isn’t just about guilds and the guild leader. It really offers a lot of insight for leaders, officers, and curious members. It also provides me the opportunity to receive some direct feedback. I hope you enjoy it!

Diablo 3 Hype – I’ll be that guy

FerrelOne of the things I really dislike about the blogging experience is the contrarian who feels it is necessary to make a post talking about how a new game that everyone else loves sucks. It seems someone always has to be a “special snowflake” as Vaellen calls it. Unfortunately this time it appears that someone has to be me. Now full disclaimer: I am not about to say Diablo 3 sucks, is bad, or anything like that. I do not truly believe that but I realize I’ll probably get some hate-mail regardless. What I am going to say is why I am a little disappointed.

NBI: Writers Block

Newbie Blogger IconIt is inevitable that as a writer you will occasionally feel the sting of writers block. You will feel like you should probably update your blog but you will lack to motivation to do so. The words will not be bubbling up inside you, screaming to be spilled out of your head like cheap beer from a pledge at a college frat party. It happens to us all and presents us the opportunity to give up or shine! I’ve dealt with writers block several times and I have some tips that just might help you out too.

Night Haven, HOMM VI, and Diablo 3 oh my!

Night Haven LogoNow that I’ve completed the manuscript for The Guild Leader’s Companion 2e and sent it off for editing I have some free time before I pick back up on my third book. I’m still trying to avoid the reality that I’ve started a new term for my master’s degree so this weekend I actually spent a lot of time gaming outside of Rift! Aurelis and I hopped in our time machine and went back to play Heroes of Might and Magic VI or whatever they changed the name to for no reason (I think Might & Magic: Heroes VI). Obviously our time machine didn’t have to go that far back.
