Welcome back to another episode of MMO Radio! This week we’re pleased to be joined by Justin “Syp” Olivetti of Massively.com and his blog Bio Break. Justin is a prolific MMO blogger whose hard work has taken him from the grassroots of WordPress to being a Senior Contributing Editor and multi-columnist for a major news site. He’s also just a good guy and a lot of fun to talk with, so big thanks to him for joining us.

Our topic this week is timely, since the three of us all got started around this man’s last game: Mark Jacobs is bringing back RvR with Camelot Unchained! Mark’s resume is storied, being most well known for the MMO classic, Dark Age of Camelot, but ending with the promising yet unsuccessful Warhammer Online. Do we believe he can pull it off? And even if he does, is there an audience for a full on PvP MMO anymore?

Personally, I think Mr. Jacobs is making a lot of smart moves but I’m fearful of treading back into promise territory. Mythic didn’t really deliver with the whole WAR thing.

When you read Jacobs’ interview with Syp he says he takes responsibility as the leader, but when Syp asks what went wrong he answers that “things that seemed doable run aground a year or two later” and that in the future he “would be a lot more skeptical of statements like, “Trust me, Mark, this will work.””

    When a game launches “too soon”, that means they could not produce the stuff they set out to produce in the amount of time they could afford to pay the team’s salaries and remain in development. If you were to tell me that cutting the scope down to size would have been unworkable for the game in the long term because it would be prohibitive to fix later, and therefore you intentionally chose to take a risk on the state of the game at launch, I could understand how that was the least bad option you had in front of you. Instead, Jacobs takes the perspective that things not being done on time is unavoidable.

    Perhaps this is the most honest approach – though other games manage to make some semblance of their release schedules – but it definitely would not reassure me about his ability to keep the team within the tight budget he’s looking at. And this time his incentive to over-hype is even more pronounced because he has to talk up the game to convince people to pony up $5 million one or more years before it’s ready for the public.
