NBI: Guest Post

Newbie Blogger IconIt can be really tough to get the exposure you need as a new blogger. Even with the Newbie Blogger Initiative in full swing you can’t be certain that potential audiences will click through a shared link to check you out. You need to get your name and work out in front of someone before they come to your site. How do you do that? Guest posts! Long time bloggers with established audiences know that content is important. The more quality content the better!

Everyone needs a break now and then. As a blogger who has been at this for over four years I can safely say I’m on a break almost all of the time. Between writing books, doing a podcast, and my real life responsibilities Epic Slant slips from time to time. If someone asked to write a guest post for me I would jump right at it. As a new blogger that is a perfect opportunity to put yourself in front of a bigger audience. An Epic Slant reader that really likes your work will be more inclined to then click that link to check out what else you have.

How do you do a guest blog post? It is really simple: just ask. I know I’m not the only blogger that would gladly accept some help. The key is to find a blog that has a similar style, tone, and subject as your own. If you are all about EverQuest 2 go find a bigger EverQuest 2 blog. If you like movies, go find a movie blog! Finding a similar blog and just asking for the chance to post is really all there is to it. What is the worst possible outcome? The blogger says no and you move on to the next one. No big deal.

When you do a guest blog post remember that you are basically putting your resume out there. This is you auditioning for a role or applying for a job. If you don’t put out a great piece of work you run the risk of not receiving a click through and, even worse, the blogger not asking you to do another post some other time. A guest blog post should be grammar and spell checked multiple times. You should be certain you have your facts straight. Most importantly, it should be a post that adds value to the site and is not just a sales pitch for your blog. Readers and bloggers see right through that. You need to bring your A game (even if the blog your posting on barely ranks as a C game).

The more you post on other blogs the more exposure you’ll have to other audiences. You’ll also become a reputable figure as someone that a blogger can trust to get good content on their site if they need to take a break or are otherwise unavailable. You’ve also created a relationship so that if you’re the person that needs a break you won’t mind asking that someone else to fill in for you. That is a great thing to have in your pocket. So get out there, make some friends, and do some guest blog posts. You can even start right here at Epic Slant! Send me an email some time!
