Today is both an exciting and frightening day for me. After over a years worth of work, a lot of learning and some shenanigans my book is finally available for purchase. I’m excited because I’ve been wanting to get to this point since January. On the other side of the coin I’m a bit frightened that I’ll only sell an embarrassingly few copies or that it will receive some terrible reviews. I’ve prepared myself for the occasional negative review but I’m not going to say I’m thrilled about that prospect! At any rate the time has come to officially announce it and start the shameless shilling. That is also something I’m not accustomed to but it is certainly better than the book being a flop!
The book is currently available on Amazon in paperback and on the Kindle. It will be showing up in other online retailers and possibly some stores over the next few months. At the same time the general description and “look inside” haven’t yet been pulled from the database. The process really does take quite a bit longer than I imagined. On the plus side the book looks wonderful and working with Amazon has been very easy.
When I started working on the GLC I just didn’t feel like there was a lot of resources available to new and intermediate guild leaders. An individual could look all over the internet and find bits and pieces of advice but there just wasn’t a lot of centralized knowledge. I really wanted to address that. The Guild Leader’s Companion is basically a collection of good advice, lessons learned and some background stories. In the book I basically cover the roles most guilds need, how to deal with conflict, some good tips on raiding, a huge section on loot and some example documentation to get you going. I tried to take the tone of an adviser instead of a commander. I just don’t feel that telling people exactly what to do is the right way to do things nor effective. Every guild is different and I can’t judge them all! It is targeted at guild leaders and officers but I’ve found in the focus groups that regular MMORPG guild members are really responding to it to. It seems that they get a better understanding of why their leadership corps does things and it creates mutual understanding. The book also has some interesting stories about Iniquity and the insanity we went through during our hardcore raid years! There should be a little something for anyone who plays an MMORPG and I tried to keep it on the point without getting to deep into the weeds.
That is my sales pitch then! If you’re so inclined please pick up a The Guild Leader’s Companion on Amazon. I’ve also got a static page on Epic Slant for you to leave comments about the book and to post other reviews as they come in. Finally I’ve got the old fan page running on Facebook over there to the right. I suppose that is what the marketing types do! It has been a long process and I hope you guys appreciate the book and enjoy it as much as I did writing it! I’m proud of it and can’t wait to hear what you think (even though I am nervous about that)! Tell your friends and remember, Clerics Wear Plate!
